Reading and analyzing a research paper can be a tough task for any busy engineering student. I am here to tell you how you can read research papers efficiently without overwhelming yourself with lots of technical jargon.

It is very simple , you can use The Three-Pass Approach.

The Three-Pass Approach involves reading a research paper three times, with a different objective in each pass.

First Pass – A Glance. Second Pass – A Grasp. Third Pass – Grokking.

Let's discuss them in detail.

A Glance

In the first pass, we will only take a quick look at the paper.

During this stage, get familiar with the general idea of the paper. Read the abstract, introduction, and conclusion. Go through the section headings, subsection headings, and references.

By the end of this pass, you should be able to answer the 5 Cs:

Category: What type of paper is it?Context:What is the paper about?Correctness: Are the assumptions used in paper reasonable and valid? Clarity: Is the paper well-written and easy to understand? Contribution:What is the paper's main contribution?

A Grasp

In the second pass, we will grasp the content of the paper without going into too much detail.

We will jot down the key points and carefully go through the graphs, diagrams, and tables.

By the end of this pass, we should be able to summarize the main idea of the paper and support it with evidence from the study.

Grokking

Grokking means understanding something deeply.

In this pass, we will study the paper in depth. We will pay close attention to the assumptions, methodology, challenges, and limitations.

Also, try to think about: "How would I present this idea myself?"

By the end of this pass, we should be able to:

• Reconstruct the entire structure of the paper from memory. • Identify its strengths and weaknesses. • Generate ideas for future work and improvements.

This process may take 4–5 hours for beginners and around 1 hour for experienced readers, depending on the complexity of the paper.

How I Use This Approach

This approach helps me understand and retain concepts efficiently.

I personally give a research paper one week so that I can analyze and retain as much information as possible.

My process looks like this:

Day 1: First Pass and Second Pass, along with note-taking. Days 2–6: Third Pass with daily review and deeper analysis. Day 7:Final summary, review, and key insights.

Final Thoughts

This structured approach can save you from drowning in unnecessary details while helping you build a deeper understanding of the research.

Thank you for your time.
